As part of the Life Landscape Fire project, CIM Viseu Dão Lafões took part in the “European Meeting on Ecology and the Use of Fire in Landscape Management”, held at the Environmental Education and Interpretation Centre of the Corno do Bico Protected Landscape in Paredes de Coura, organised by the Rural Laboratory of Paredes de Coura.
The meeting was attended by technical experts with vast experience in the study and use of prescribed burning, representing the following organisations: Agronomy Institute of the University of Lisbon, the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, the Agency for the Integrated Management of Rural Fires, I.P., the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, I.P., The Nature Conservancy (representing Serbia), representatives of forest management organisations from Croatia and Macedonia and the Alto Minho CIM.
This meeting made it possible to identify and evaluate good practices in the current use of fire by rural communities in Europe and to analyse their role in the conservation of ecosystems and landscape management, with the aim of developing proposals for EU member states to strengthen the role of traditional fire use practices in conservation and in increasing the resilience of landscapes to climate change and related risks.
