Pilot controlled fire actions

Starting in March 2023, under the Life Landscape Fire project, several pilot prescribed burning actions were carried out in the municipalities of São Pedro do Sul, Vila Nova de Paiva, Vouzela and Castro Daire.

These actions were supported by operatives from the Volunteer Fire Brigades of the respective municipalities where the actions took place, as well as teams from the GNR’s Special Protection and Relief Unit (UEPS), the Intermunicipal Community’s Forest Sapper Brigades and prescribed burning technicians from the municipalities of the Viseu Dão Lafões territory.

Compared to other vegetation management techniques, prescribed burning achieves a variety of objectives: forestry, silvopastoral, hunting and ecological. It is of great importance for fire prevention, reducing the area covered by fires each year and keeping forest fuel loads below critical levels.
