Launch of the European LIFE Programme

The Viseu Dão Lafões Intermunicipal Community (CIM) was present at the launch of the European LIFE Programme in Brussels, which includes the Life Landscape Fire Project, the only Portuguese project to be approved.

This project, approved in August 2019, with the formal signature of the financing contract, presents an eligible investment of €2,377,698.00, of which €1,206,971.00 are managed by CIM Viseu Dão Lafões, and contemplates the development of the following actions:

  • Extension of the study on the classification and typification of major forest fires, both in time and space, with a view to building a database on the history of this disruption to the landscape;
  • Reconstruction and analysis of large forest fires and application of propagation simulators in order to determine Elements of Strategic Management;
  • Development of actions with the use of fire associated with pastoral activity, seeking, on the one hand, to identify the best techniques and prescription parameters for improving pastures and, on the other hand, to annul the effects of fire’s multi propagation points on the landscape through the integrated use of fire/grazing;
  • Developing an Organisation Plan for Grazing and Extensive Livestock Raising, by experimenting with pilot areas, in a context of prevention and reduction of the risks related to large-scale fires and socio-economic valorisation of the forest area;
  • Development of pilot actions for the control of forest invasive species using a combination of fire and grazing;
  • Training of operators and technicians in the use of fire in prevention and suppression;
  • Training municipal technicians in the use of risk analysis and simulation tools;
  • Analysis of the hunting potential for the development of the activity in the territory, with a view to landscape planning and the enhancement of forest resources and economic diversification; and

Expansion of the “Intermunicipal Emergency and Civil Protection Platform” making it a transversal tool for a wider territory and extending its use to other bodies and citizens.
