Interpretative Trail | Awareness Raising Action on Invasive Species

An interpretative trail was held on the 19th May, in Fontelo Forest in Viseu, with the aim of identifying invasive plant species and raising awareness among young people on this issue.

This initiative, organized by CIM Viseu Dão Lafões and Escola Superior Agrária de Viseu (ESAV), and in coordination with the technicians of the Forestry Technical Office and the Municipal Civil Protection Service of the Municipality of Viseu, took place within the scope of the Invasive Species Week 2023 (SEI2023) and the “Life Landscape Fire” project.

The students of the Professional Graduate Course in Civil Protection and Agronomic Engineering of the Escola Superior Agrária de Viseu participated in this action.

Along the way and among others, the following invasive species were identified: Acacia dealbata, Acacia melanoxylon, Robinia pseudoacacia, Trandescantia fluminensis, etc.

Invasive species reduce the resilience of natural habitats, making them more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Some herbaceous and tree species which have become invasive can significantly alter fire regimes, especially in areas that are becoming warmer and drier, thus increasing the frequency and severity of forest fires.
